German chemical producer BASF agrees to source 55 MW of solar power

BASF Corporation, a German chemical producer, announced Dec. 21 that it completed an agreement for 55 MW of solar power from a new Texas project.

The Space City Solar Project has a total capacity of 345 MW and was developed by EDF Renewables in Wharton County, Texas. Construction on the facility is expected to begin in Summer 2021 and it should be operational in Summer 2022.

“This transaction demonstrates EDF Renewables’ continued commitment to helping corporate customers meet their wholesale power supply needs and sustainability initiatives,” Matt McCluskey, Vice President, South Region Development for EDF Renewables, said in a statement. “Space City Solar will provide an economic boost to the local economy through construction jobs, local spend and an expanded tax base.”

The solar facility is expected to generate more than $30 million in tax revenue over the operating life for Wharton County and will provide up to $2.5 million in revenue for the Louise Independent School District, which is leasing land for its construction.
