Target adds three new RE projects to cover 25% of electricity use
Target announced March 4 three new renewable energy partnerships that will cover nearly a quarter of all its electricity use with wind and solar power.
The retail giant is currently pursuing a goal of 100% renewable electricity by 2030, and these new projects will bring its total usage to nearly 50%. The new projects include two solar farms in Texas, including the Golden Buckle Solar Project with Savion, and the Haystack Wind Project in Nebraska with Ørsted.
The new projects will put Target ahead of schedule in meeting its 2030 goal.
Major Target suppliers, like PepsiCo and Hormel Foods, have also signed on to at least one of these projects, which will assist Target’s goal of reducing its greenhouse gas emissions from operations, purchased goods and services by 30% below 2017 levels by 2030.
In other sustainability moves, Target completed its 114th electric vehicle charging site installation at one of its stores at the end of 2020, which meant they exceeded an installation goal set in 2018 and that 1,000 chargers were available across its locations. It also has installed rooftop solar on over 540 stores to date.
