U.S. Steel reveals sustainably-made steel product

United States Steel Corporation announced March 24 its new line of sustainably-made steel and its continued sustainability commitments.

The verdeX line of steel will be made with only a quarter of the carbon emissions previously required. The product is expected to launch some time in 2021.

The company remains committed to reducing greenhouse gas emissions intensity, in addition to producing high strength steel at its LEED certified Big River Steel subsidiary.

“We know that the urgency of the climate crisis requires more from all of us,” David B. Burritt, U.S. Steel president and chief executive officer, said in a statement. “So, we’re changing our portfolio of steelmaking technologies. Creating something new, steels that are best for our customers and best for our planet. Together we can build a sustainable future.”

Next steps for the company include partnering with customers to introduce its line of verdeX sustainable steel for use in products. More information should be provided about this project in the coming weeks.
