Fort Hunter Liggett Plans Solar-Plus-Battery Microgrid

Fort Hunter Liggett will soon be installing a $21.6 million microgrid project to support its net-zero goal by 2022.

The project will be completed on the 165,000-acre U.S. Army Reserve training center by Ameresco and will include controls and interconnection for new and existing generation and storage systems. The project will add 3.75 MW of solar generation and 5 MWh of battery storage with the microgrid control system.

Ameresco will also upgrade the existing system to include automating medium voltage switches to easily regular energy use at the facility. The project should allow the base to enjoy more energy resiliency in the event of a power outage.

The start of the microgrid project “is the culmination of more than a decade of projects, development and planning,” Col. Charles Bell, FHL garrison commander, said in a statement. “The idea began here, and was not tasked to us from higher up. It shows how forward-thinking our team is to generate DoD-wide projects at the grassroots level. It is a huge win.”

This is not the first energy-conscious project completed on the base. Over the past decade, FHL has eliminated its use of fuel oil, reduced energy intensity by 63%, reduced propane use and incorporated ground source heat pumps.
