Ski Industry Leaders Join Together on Climate Initiatives
The largest ski resort owners have created the Climate Collaborative Charter in an effort to combat climate change and address their respective greenhouse gas emissions.
The charter includes Alterra Mountain Company, Boyne Resorts, POWDR and Vail Resorts, representing 71 North American resorts. The companies have agreed to advocate for effective climate policy and to set sustainability goals for their resorts.
Each company committed to reducing its energy use and pursuing renewable energy sources to achieve carbon neutrality. The charter also includes a commitment to share best practices to accelerate change in their respective communities and support the National Ski Areas Association's Sustainable Slopes platform.
The companies pledged to incorporate sustainability into all aspects of their resorts and to advocate for climate protection and collaborate with others on sustainability initiatives.
“As part of POWDR’s Play Forever commitment to protect the environment and support our community, the importance of collaboration to drive both action and inspiration at scale is paramount,” Laura Schaffer, POWDR’s director of corporate responsibility, said in a statement. “We all must reach across the chairlift to work together, and the Climate Collaborative Charter is a phenomenal step of unity that complements on-site actions like using solar power at all of our resorts. POWDR is eager to work with Alterra Mountain Company, Boyne Resorts, Vail Resorts, NSAA and the mountain resort industry as a whole as a united front to drive necessary change.”
