DOE Awards $84 Million For Building Efficiency Projects

The U.S. Department of Energy announced Aug. 13 a new program that will fund 44 projects dealing with energy-efficient building technologies, construction practices, and the U.S. buildings-sector workforce.

The DOE awarded $84.6 million to the 44 projects spread across 20 states. The funding will go toward technologies for thermal energy storage, building envelopes, lighting, heating, ventilation, air conditioning, refrigeration and water heating.

The fund is meant to support President Biden’s 2030 net-zero carbon goal. It is estimated that residential and commercial buildings account for more than one-third of all carbon emissions in the U.S. each year, in addition to consuming 40% of the nation’s energy and 75% of its electricity.

“Americans spend about $100 billion every year on wasted energy from buildings, heating and cooling units, and more – increasing energy bills and needless emissions that dirty our air and worsen the climate crisis,” Secretary of Energy Jennifer Granholm said in a statement. “By pursuing advancements that make both existing and newly constructed buildings more energy efficient, we can save consumers money and reduce the climate impacts of the places we live and work.”

The individual research projects that will receive the funding are based at various universities, corporations, research institutes and energy associations across the country.
