Canadian Habitat for Humanity Project to Use Low-Carbon Concrete

Habitat for Humanity will soon begin construction on a 4-plex housing project in Kingston, Ontario using low-carbon concrete produced using cement from Lafarge’s line of near zero-CO2 building materials.

Holcim’s “Houses of Tomorrow” initiative was first launched to extend the use globally of its ECOPlanet cement in the creation of low-emission cement-based materials. Its Lafarge ready mix plant in Kingston used this cement for the first time and produced the first ECOPact Zero concrete in Eastern Canada.

LafargeHolcim will donate all the concrete needed for the new construction by Habitat for Humanity. The ECOPlanet material is estimated to use less than half the kgCO2/mt emissions that is necessary for regular cement.

“We are very excited and grateful for the partnership we have with Lafarge,” Deb Wilson, director of construction for Habitat for Humanity’s Kingston Limestone Region, said in a statement. “As we strive to design and build our homes with more energy efficient elements and sustainable products, it is a perfect opportunity for us to have Lafarge generously donate their ECOPact Zero carbon concrete mix for this project. We applaud Lafarge on their commitment to our Habitat project and for being leaders in producing greener and more sustainable products to help protect our environment.”
