AT&T to Leverage 5G to Help Businesses Reduce 1 Gigaton of Emissions
AT&T announced Aug. 31 a new ambition to help businesses collectively reduce a gigaton of greenhouse gas emissions by 2035.
The telecommunications company is working with Microsoft, Equinix, Duke Energy and a range of research universities and other organizations on deploying its broadband technologies on a global scale. AT&T’s 5G network will be used to help with the adoption of smart IoT solutions and AI management and monitoring for transportation and energy.
“As businesses embrace climate change as a priority, our connectivity solutions can help them make progress to reach their goals,” Anne Chow, CEO of AT&T Business, said in a statement. “AT&T has a track record of delivering sustainability results within our own large-scale operations and for our business customers across industries. The time is now to expand our impact by developing and deploying more capabilities and solutions that enable companies to reduce their environmental footprint. This is a collective imperative across all business that also benefits the planet and society as a whole.”
The company plans to use its partnerships within the newly formed Connected Climate Initiative to develop new products and use cases and scale these innovations to build 5G- and other broadband-enabled climate solutions.
AT&T previously used its technology to assist in the reduction of more than 72 million metric tons of CO2e through smart IoT and edge-computing technologies in the manufacturing, agriculture and commercial sectors.
This collaboration will also include participation by SunPower, Badger Meter, IndustLabs, Traxen, BSR, RMI, Third Derivative and the Carbon Trust.
