LSB Sets Emissions Reduction Goal for 2030

In its first annual sustainability report, LSB Industries, an ammonia producer, announced it plans to lower the company’s Scope 1 and Scope 2 CO2 emissions per ton of ammonia production by 25% by 2030.

The company is also exploring opportunities to reduce the CO2 associated with its power usage through the use of renewable power at its facilities, as well as alternatives to traditional natural gas.

“At LSB we create products that improve the quality of life for current and future generations with the goal of continually reducing our environmental impact on the planet,” stated Mark Behrman, LSB Industries’ President and CEO, in a statement. “We are pleased to share our first sustainability report, showcasing our commitment to implement sustainable solutions into every facet of our operations.”

In 2022, the company announced two major projects to reduce its GHG emissions at its El Dorado, Arkansas and Pryor, Oklahoma facilities. These projects will allow the company to supply low-carbon products when they come online.

LSB partnered with Lapis Energy to develop a carbon capture and sequestration facility that is expected to reduce CO2 emissions at the El Dorado facility in Arkansas by approximately 450 thousand metric tons annually. The El Dorado carbon capture and storage (CCS) project will capture and permanently sequester CO2. The company expects to begin CO2 injection in late 2025 pending an approved class VI permit from the EPA.

In May 2022, LSB announced a partnership with Bloom Energy and thyssenkrupp Uhde to produce approximately 30,000 metric tons of zero carbon or “green” ammonia per year at Pryor. As of October 2023, this project is on hold until the IRS provides further clarity on 45V tax credits and the company's view of capital costs points to more favorable economics for the project.
