City of Sierra Vista implements $14 million energy initiative

The city of Sierra Vista, Ariz., will roll out $14 million in energy efficiency projects across the city in an effort to make it a more desirable sports and leisure tourism destination.

The project will be paid for over the next 10 years through a partnership with Schneider Electric. However, the city expects hundreds of thousands of dollars in annual operating cost savings.

One of the main projects will be a revamp of the city’s sports fields as a way to attract more traveling tournaments. The Domingo Paiz soccer and baseball fields, Bill Stone Field, Arbenz Field, pickleball courts, skate park, Eddie Cyr Center Park, Cole Field, Roberts Field, and Brown Field will replace 454 old HID fixtures with high-efficiency LED. The field will also be installing a 100% recyclable, eco-friendly artificial turf.

Additionally, the city is replacing nine rooftop package HVAC units with high-efficiency models at City Hall and replacing 3,000 interior and 484 exterior light fixtures at various city facilities with LEDs.

Other improvements include a redesign of the pool heating system, installing two new high-efficiency boilers, installing four new titanium heat exchangers and replacing the wave machine at “The Cove”, an indoor swimming facility. The Police Department will also receive a replacement chiller and boiler.

“Our team in Sierra Vista has a long-term vision to become a leading attraction for sports and recreation in the state,” Rick Mueller, Mayor of Sierra Vista, said in a statement. “With Schneider Electric’s expertise, we’re on our way to achieving that vision and much more. We’re excited to work to improve our City grounds and facilities, creating ideal locations for local events, vendors, and visitors alike.”

Renovations for the projects began earlier this year and are expected to be completed in early 2020.
