Protective Buys RECs to Cover 100% of HQ Energy Use

Protective Life Corporation will soon be powering its Birmingham corporate headquarters with 100% renewable energy.

The insurance financial services company will purchase Renewable Energy Credits (RECs) from Alabama Power to cover the power used in its 620,000-square-foot facility. The RECs will be tied to the Chisholm View Wind Farm in Oklahoma, which provides power to Alabama Power under a long-term contract.

Protective estimates that its headquarters uses the equivalent of 19 million kWh of wind energy annually. The agreement with Alabama Power will allow Proactive to cover all its energy use in 2021 and will be renewable for additional years.

“At Protective, we are committed to investing for the future,” Scott Adams, executive vice president of corporate responsibility, strategy and innovation at Protective, said in a statement. “We are fortunate to have an innovative company like Alabama Power in our backyard, enabling us to power our headquarters with 100% renewable energy. As two of Alabama’s largest employers, we have a responsibility to help build a sustainable future.”
