Rio Tinto Explores Renewables Opportunities in Tasmania

Rio Tinto and the Tasmanian Government announced Feb. 20 a new partnership to investigate opportunities for decarbonizing industrial sectors in the region.

The two completed a Memorandum of Understanding agreeing to look into how the Bell Bay Aluminum smelter could support the development of new industries and renewable energy in the region through its manufacturing capability and electricity demand. Rio Tinto will assess how its Bell Bay Aluminum could be further decarbonized and options for future investment to increase the facility’s competitiveness.

The partnership will support the Tasmanian Government’s target of doubling renewable electricity generation by 2040.

“Aluminium is essential for the global transition to a low-carbon economy, and we are excited about the contribution our Bell Bay smelter can make both towards this transition and to the region’s future,” Jakob Stausholm, Rio Tinto chief executive, said in a statement. “We want to help ensure a strong and vibrant future for Bell Bay, where we have been part of the community for well over half a century and where we are actively working with the Tasmanian Government on a shared vision for the future.”
