Wells Fargo, Hewlett Packard, 6 more join RE100

The RE100 initiative, led by international nonprofit The Climate Group in partnership with CDP, on Sept. 20 announced that eight new businesses have made the pledge to power their operations with 100% renewable energy

Wells Fargo & Co., Hewlett Packard Enterprise Co. and VF Corp. - the owner of apparel and footwear brands including The North Face, Timberland and Wrangler - are among the largest of the new names, which also includes cloud computing companies VMware Inc. and Rackspace Inc.; global alcoholic beverage company Diageo; and Norway’s largest financial services company DNB.

The announcement came as world leaders, NGOs and corporations began their descent onto New York City this week for Climate Week NYC, hosted by The Climate Group, which coincides with the start of the 71st Session of the United Nations General Assembly. These newest eight companies follow recent onboarders Apple Inc., Bank of America Corp. and General Motors Co. and  bring the total number of members in the initiative to 81, the initiative said in a blog post.

In a statement, Wells Fargo Senior Vice President and Head of Environmental Affairs Mary Wenzel said: "Learning from RE100 experts and other members is going to be critical as we work toward meeting our 2020 sustainability commitments, including our goal of powering 100% of our global operations with renewable electricity by 2017 and transitioning to long-term agreements that directly fund new renewable electricity projects by 2020."
