Report: Trump targets 70% cut to DOE energy efficiency, renewables office in revised budget

A new draft of the Trump administration's federal budget for fiscal year 2018 is calling for a 70% cut to the U.S. Department of Energy's Office of Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency, according to a May 17 report from Axios. 

The news outlet cited a draft DOE budget document it viewed as also calling for cuts to the fossil fuel and nuclear energy offices budgets at 31% and 54%, respectively.  Axios said the DOE did not respond to a request for comment on the story. 

The report indicates that work on a more detailed version of the president's earlier "skinny budget" is underway. That previously proposed draft budget called for a 31% cut to the U.S. EPA but a smaller budget cut, 5.6% for the DOE. 

The White House has said it will send its full budget request to Congress next week, according to Axios. Its earlier version, released in March, had drawn criticism from both Democrats and Republicans, as Morning Consult reported at the time.
