Two European Coca-Cola Sites are Now Carbon Neutral

Coca-Cola Europacific Partners (CCEP) announced Sept. 1 that two of its manufacturing sites have been certified as carbon neutral.

The certifications of the Jordbro site in Sweden and Vilas del Turbón site in Spain are the first in a pilot program aiming to certify at least six CCEP sites as carbon neutral by the end of 2023.

The sites reached carbon neutral status by using 100% renewable electricity and reducing its energy use with LED lighting, a biomass boiler that uses sustainably sourced wood pellets and electric on-site forklift trucks.

The Jordbro site reduced emissions by 68% per liter of product produced over the past five years, while the Vilas de Turbón location eliminated 36% per liter of product produced. The Jordbro site also began using CO2 for the creation of its carbonated beverages from a carbon-neutral source that creates this CO2 as a by-product of bioethanol, produced from feedstocks.

For the unavoidable emissions in its operations, the sites purchased Gold Standard certified carbon credits from a reforestation project in Orinoco, Colombia. The sites are now targeting a further reduction in their carbon emissions over the next three years.

“Driving effective long-term change in our environmental impact is a key priority for us, which is why we have committed to reducing emissions as far as we can before offsetting,” José Antonio Echeverría, chief customer service and supply chain officer at CCEP, said in a statement. “We’re delighted to recognise this significant milestone for CCEP, and the teams who are helping us to accelerate our progress in reducing our emissions across our supply chain. This is a very important moment, and a great example of how our investment and commitment to innovation is helping to bring us closer to our net zero ambition.”
