Anheuser-Busch collaborates on sustainable rice production

A partnership between Anheuser-Busch and Indigo Agriculture resulted in a 26.6% reduction of methane emissions due to changes in their rice production techniques.

The program was meant to encourage farmer environmental responsibility by showcasing the opportunities for sustainable practices, especially by working with Anheuser-Busch, the largest end-user of rice in the United States. Anheuser-Busch incorporated Indigo products such as their microbial products, conservation management practices and the efficient transaction and delivery of grain to offer growers an end-to-end solution to support the commercial production of sustainable rice. The brewer also used Indigo Carbon to create additional income streams for growers through the abatement and sequestration of on-farm emissions.

Indigo brought to the rice growers that supply Anheuser-Busch counsel based on data-driven insights to improve water conservation and optimize nitrogen application throughout the rice growing process. The program has already seen a 13.3% reduction in nitrogen application, the equivalent of ten tractor-trailers.

“Anheuser-Busch is proud to partner with Indigo and Arkansas rice farmers to bring this industry-leading program to life,” Jess Newman, Senior Director of Agricultural Procurement & Sustainability at Anheuser-Busch, said in a statement. “We are thrilled with the environmental results the Indigo growers achieved, which advance three of our 2025 sustainability goals: smart agriculture, watershed health, and carbon emissions. We are excited to continue exploring ways to deliver choices to both our growers and consumers.”

Indigo and Anheuser-Busch extended their partnership through the 2020 season and in the second phase Indigo will experiment with advanced data collection methods and remote-sensing technology such as drones, water sensors, and a mobile app to automate and enhance the project’s data collection efforts and further optimize the sustainable production of rice.
