American Express Launches Earth Month Initiatives

In honor of Earth Month, American Express announced its launch of new initiatives to support a low-carbon future.

The company plans to expand its Carbon Footprint Tool for select clients and a digital pilot that will give U.S. Consumer and Small Business Card Members visibility into their estimated carbon footprint.

To advance its commitment to net-zero emissions by 2035 in alignment with the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi), American Express has also submitted near-term and long-term emissions reduction targets to the SBTi for validation.

With the enhanced Carbon Footprint Tool, select clients can use additional categories to track estimated carbon emissions associated with spend across air travel, ground transportation, hotel stays, food and beverage, and retail. The tool applies conversion factors and standards from various governmental and private organizations to a company’s spend on the American Express Corporate Product Program.

Providing a new optimized experience, the digital pilot will give members visibility into their environmental impact and contribution to carbon removal efforts. New features include the Amex Estimated Carbon Emissions Tracker, Contribution Services for Carbon Removal Projects, and Carbon Reduction Insights.

During Earth Month, eligible Card Members will also have the opportunity to participate in the company’s “Shop with Purpose” program, which provides Offers that incentivize spending on eligible purchases from select Certified B Corporations™.

In a statement, Madge Thomas, Head of Corporate Sustainability and President of American Express Foundation, explored how these initiatives support a low-carbon future: “This Earth Month, we’re introducing new digital solutions that enable our U.S. Consumer and Small Business Card Members and select Corporate clients to better understand their estimated carbon footprints and work towards a low-carbon future. These initiatives build on our commitment to advance climate solutions for our colleagues, customers and communities.”

American Express will also host Green2Gether volunteer activities so colleagues worldwide can volunteer and participate in colleague-led sustainability initiatives during Earth Month.
