N.Y. village plans $5 million in energy efficiency improvements

The Village of Lindenhurst, N.Y., announced Aug. 18 that they partner with Johnson Controls on a $5.8 million Energy Savings Performance Contract (ESPC) that will improve the town’s energy use and generate $8.3 million in energy cost savings over 20 years.

The project will include Village-wide infrastructure improvements like solar installations, LED street lights and other renewable energy technologies.

Eleven buildings, two parks and a Marina will be receiving upgrades; LED lighting will be installed in municipality facilities and outdoor community spaces, generating $31,000 in lighting rebates alone. The Rainbow Community Center will also be receiving a new high-efficiency boiler and electric car charging stations will be installed at Village Hall.

Additionally, solar arrays will be installed on facility rooftops and on the rooftop of the new carport at the commuter rail parking lot.

“This partnership with Johnson Controls will help the Village remain forward-thinking, allowing us to explore new opportunities for efficiency,” Pat Pichichero, Village of Lindenhurst Trustee, said in a statement. “We are proud to be a leader in sustainability in the Long Island region and are dedicated to providing a community that will continue to serve citizens for generations to come. From energy updates to our Rainbow Community Center to new LED lighting in the marina, these improvements will help the Village remain a thriving community for residents and visitors alike.”

Johnson Controls will also help the Village develop good waste oil heating practices to convert used truck oil into efficient energy. The Village plans for these upgrades to help them achieve long-term budget neutrality and improve community-wide sustainability initiatives.
