New York State to Increase Use of Renewable Energy

New York Governor Kathy Hochul delivered her 2022 State of the State Address, outlining her plan that includes making the state a national leader in climate action and green jobs by adding more wind energy and the possibility of green hydrogen.

The plan for an integrated, decarbonized energy system also includes a set of policies to grow clean energy storage, phase out polluting power plants, animate the market for green hydrogen and ensure quality green job creation.

Hochul announced plans to invest in offshore wind infrastructure, procure enough wind energy to power at least 1.5 million homes, initiate planning for an offshore wind transmission network, and launch the offshore wind Master Plan 2.0 Deep Water. This will ensure that the state has the strongest offshore wind energy market along the Eastern Seaboard. The Governor's plan for offshore wind will support more than 6,800 jobs, a combined economic impact of $12.1 billion statewide, and more than 4.3 gigawatts of energy, enough to power nearly 3 million homes in New York.

The plan includes a $500 million investment in offshore wind and will directly invest in offshore wind manufacturing and supply chain infrastructure, create thousands of good-paying green jobs, deliver billions in economic impact, and generate enough energy to power millions of homes. 

"With this investment, New York will lead the nation on offshore wind production, creating green jobs for New Yorkers, and powering our clean energy future," Governor Hochul said. "I am proud to make New York a leader in offshore wind and renewable energy. We must harness the potential of offshore wind to fuel our economy forward and meet our ambitious climate goals."  

The plan includes procuring enough new offshore wind energy to power at least 1.5 million homes, bringing the state's total to more than 4.5 million homes powered by offshore wind. New York will begin construction on the state's first offshore wind project, the South Fork Wind Farm, in early 2022. 

Hochul's plan to achieve a minimum of 1 million electrified homes and up to 1 million electrification-ready homes includes requiring zero on-site GHG emissions for new construction no later than 2027, establishing a dedicated green electrification fund, and electrifying low-income homes through the housing capital plan.
