Kioxia Accelerates Actions to Achieve Net-Zero by 2050

Kioxia Group announced its pledge to accelerate actions to combat climate change by aiming to achieve net zero by 2050 through the reduction of Scope 1 greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, which emanate from its business sites, and Scope 2 emissions from its use of purchased energy.

The company has already set a target of procuring 100% of its energy from renewable sources by 2040. With the addition of direct emissions from its business sites, its net-zero goal will become more all-inclusive by covering emissions from all of its business activities.

Kioxia will achieve this goal by continuing to install equipment that eliminates the emission of perfluorocarbons (PFCs), gases that cause global warming, at all of its manufacturing facilities built since 2011. To advance its energy procurement efforts, the company will continue to install energy-efficient manufacturing and power equipment.

Since 2022, Kioxia has been installing solar power generation systems at its Kitakami and Yokkaichi plants, the largest at any semiconductor plant in Japan. Additionally, it has begun purchasing electricity generated from these on-site systems under a Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) model. It is also making progress on its procurement of FIT non-fossil certificates, which are the main form of renewable energy certificates in Japan.

In a statement, Nobuo Hayasaka, President and CEO of Kioxia Holdings Corporation, discussed their commitment to sustainability, “We are committed to implementing measures to combat climate change, which is an urgent issue for the international community, and to helping address various social issues, including global environmental challenges, in order to facilitate the development of a sustainable society.”
