AIG boasts energy efficiency efforts, sustainability work with suppliers, in citizenship report

The American International Group Inc. on July 21 released its 2015 global citizenship report, outlining its plans to address climate change through investments in renewable energy and its own energy efficiency.

In the report's opening letter, AIG President and CEO Peter Hancock touted the company as the first U.S.-based insurer to adopt a public statement on climate change, "recognizing the scientific consensus that climate change is a reality, and that it is due in large part to human activities leading to greater concentrations of greenhouse gases in the earth’s atmosphere," the company adds later in the report.

On energy efficiency, AIG reported that it has invested more than $430 million invested over two years to upgrade worldwide offices using high-efficiency lighting, sustainably manufactured products, and energy-efficient mechanical infrastructure. In offices in New York City and the United Kingdom, AIG said it has achieved a 15% reduction in energy use over three years, which it says translates to an annual reduction of more than 2,500 tons of CO2 emissions.

Additionally, AIG said its planned 155,000-square foot office in Nashville, Tenn., is being built to LEED standards and certification. That office is expected to go into use in the third quarter.

The firm also listed three of its suppliers that are offering sustainability options, including Office Depot, where AIG has allocated 18% of its total supplies purchases to its "Green Category," and General Motors Co., through with AIG has seen an 8.8% reduction in CO2 emissions in its vehicle through GM Fleet's "GreenPlan" initiative.

On renewable energy investing, AIG says it has deployed more than $2 billion in wind, solar, geothermal, and hydroelectric projects worldwide. The full report is available on AIG's website
