Ireland Oks Apple plans for wind-fueled data center

Apple Inc.'s initial plans for a new, wind-powered data center in Ireland were recently greenlighted by the country's national planners.

The tech giant expects to power phase one of the facility, to be located in the western part of Ireland, with 30 MW of onshore wind, according to an Aug. 12 report from reNEWS, which noted that Apple's grander plan calls for up to eight more facilities called "data halls" over the next 15 years that could require up to 240 MW of renewable generation. The publication also reported that Apple has been seeking expressions of interests for developers, with the intent to secure power purchase agreements for one or several wind farms to power phase one.

Apple is one of 69 global corporations to-date that have committed to powering 100% of its operations with renewable energy via RE100.  In the U.S., that pledge has resulted in Apple and others taking a much more active role in corporate energy management and the broader energy industry: On Aug. 4, Apple was granted permission from FERC to sell excess generation capacity — primarily from its renewable energy investments —into the wholesale market at market rates.
