Microsoft signs PPA for 125 MW Ohio wind farm
Microsoft Corp. signed two 15-year power purchase agreements that will bring a 125 MW wind farm to Paulding County, Ohio.
The software company partnered with EDP Renewables for the project. The Timber Road IV Wind Farm is expected to be operational in 2019, according to a press release. This announcement follows the another one from Microsoft earlier this week about a 74 MW solar farm planned for North Carolina.
Microsoft expects that the project will produce enough clean energy to power more than 36,000 homes in Ohio annually and create approximately 200 jobs during construction. The wind farm is also expected to generate approximately $1.1 million each year in annual property tax revenue for the local government as well as land lease payments to area farmers and landowners.
"Bringing new wind projects online, particularly in states with relatively few projects but strong potential for growth, delivers both economic benefits and environmental progress in the near term and well into the future," Brian Janous, general manager of energy and sustainability at Microsoft, said in a statement. "We are constantly looking for opportunities where our corporate demand can not only be met but can also accelerate the transition to renewable sources."
Timber Road IV Wind Farm is Microsoft's fifth project in the larger PJM region and will bring the company's renewable energy portfolio to nearly 1.4 GW.
