Villanova Univ. to source 50% power from hydro plant

Villanova University recently announced that they have signed an agreement that will allow them to ensure that 50% of the energy they purchase will be sourced from the Holtwood Hydroelectric Power Plant.

The Pennsylvania university completed a multi-year agreement with ENGIE Resources through their independent energy consultant, Evolution Energy Partners. Of the 52,000 MWh of electricity that Villanova purchases from ENGIE, this agreement ensures that 50% will come from the 252 MW hydro plant, which is owned by Brookfield Renewable and located on the Susquehanna River in Lancaster County.

Villanova University has previously set a commitment to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050.

“Taking this step is yet another way in which Villanova can positively affect change and affirm its commitment to sustainability,” Rev. Peter M. Donohue, OSA, PhD, Villanova University President, said in a statement. “Purchasing renewable energy and exploring other innovative ways to make our campus more sustainable is one way we will help mitigate and adapt to a changing climate for a more prosperous future.”

The energy sourced from the hydro plant will power the university’s Main Campus, West Campus, South Campus and The Inn at Villanova University.
