Four tech and science companies join 111 MW wind aggregation deal
Uber, MilliporeSigma, Akamai, and Synopsys came together for an aggregation deal for 111 MW from a new 350 MW Texas wind project.
The Azure Sky wind project is the first large-scale project that combines wind and battery storage created by Enel Green Power. The four companies that joined the aggregation deal together serve as the anchor tenant for the wind project and their 111 MW portion is expected to generate approximately 430,000 MWh of electricity per year..
MilliporeSigma will purchase 68 MW from the project, Akamai will purchase 18 MW, Synopsys will purchase 15 MW and Uber will purchase 10 MW from the Azure Sky facility. The companies were supported in the deals by Sustainability Roundtable Inc.’s Net Zero Consortium for Buyers.
"This landmark Virtual Power Purchase Agreement is instrumental to Synopsys' ability to deliver on its greenhouse gas emissions reduction target of 25% by 2024," Barbara Donaldson, senior vice president of workplace resources at Synopsys, said in a statement. "The 15 megawatts of wind generation capacity will help Synopsys mitigate approximately 70% of our projected North American emissions, leading to new renewable energy on the grid and displacing fossil fuels."
The Azure Sky facility includes 350 MW of wind capacity and 137 MW of battery storage. A 100 MW portion is also being sold to Kellogg Company.
The project is currently under construction and is expected to begin operations in the first half of 2022.
