Amazon Adds New Renewable Projects, Now Ranks as Top Purchaser in Europe

Amazon announced the purchase of solar and wind power from nine new utility-scale energy projects on April 19 in the U.S., Canada, Spain, Sweden, and the UK. This brings Amazon’s total to 206 renewable energy projects globally with a capacity of 8.5 GW of electricity production. The company is now the largest corporate purchaser of renewable energy in Europe with more than 2.5 GW.

The output from all of these projects puts Amazon on a path to power 100% of its activities with renewable energy by 2025, five years ahead of the original target of 2030. The energy from these projects is used at Amazon’s corporate offices, Whole Foods Market stores, and Amazon Web Services (AWS) data centers. which power millions of web service customers around the world.

In a statement, Jeff Bezos, Amazon founder and CEO said, “Amazon continues to scale up its investments in renewable energy as part of its effort to meet The Climate Pledge, our commitment to be net-zero carbon by 2040.”

The new projects include:

  • Amazon’s first solar project paired with energy storage, based in California’s  Imperial Valley, will power more than 28,000 homes for a year and includes 70 MW of energy storage.
  • Amazon's first renewable project in Canada, a solar project in the County of Newell, Alberta, will generate 195,000 MWh of renewable energy to the grid.
  • A 350 MW wind farm off the coast of Scotland is Amazon's largest in the UK, as well as the largest corporate renewable energy deal announced by any company to date in the UK.
  • New projects in the U.S. include Amazon’s first renewable energy project in Oklahoma  - a 118 MW wind project - and three new solar projects in Ohio.
  • Two new solar projects are being built in Spain. Together they will add together add more than 170 MW to the grid.
  • An onshore wind project in Northern Sweden will produce 258 MW of power
