LG Targets Renewable Energy Transition
LG Electronics announced July 21 its commitment to sourcing 100% renewable energy by 2050.
This target will assist the technology company with its goal to reduce carbon emissions in its production process by 50% between 2017 and 2030. LG plans to first transition all offices and manufacturing sites in North America to renewable energy, while 50% of all manufacturing facilities outside of Korea are expected to be converted to 50% renewable energy in the next four years.
“Our commitment to creating a better life for all can best be actualized by LG transition to renewable energy and achieving carbon neutrality,” Park Pyung-gu, senior vice president of LG’s electronics safety and environment division, said in a statement. “In today's world, innovation doesn't just happen in the lab, they must also happen in our factories and plants. Today's manufacturers have a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to give the next generation a world worth inheriting and at LG, we take this responsibility very seriously.”
LG plans to install LG solar panels on its buildings, purchase more renewable electricity through PPAs, utilize RECs and participate in Korea Electric Power Corporation’s Green Premium program to reach its renewable energy goals.
Its most recent project was the installation of 3.2 MW of solar panels on a manufacturing site in India, which allowed LG to secure carbon reduction certificates from the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC).
