Google Joins Energy Compact for 24/7 Carbon-Free Electricity

Google announced Aug. 24 that it is joining a new initiative calling on companies, governments, and other stakeholders to transition to electricity systems running on carbon-free energy every hour of every day.

The tech company is working with SEforALL on building a global compact for 24/7 Carbon-free Energy (CFE) and will work with entities who join the compact on decarbonizing their electricity systems. The compact includes public and trackable commitments made by governments, companies, and others with specific actions to take to achieve energy goals like universal clean energy access by 2030.

“We are eager to work with Sustainable Energy for All and the world's governments and corporations to fully decarbonize grids and support a carbon-free economy,” Kate Brandt, chief sustainability officer of Google, said in a statement. “With this global Compact, we have a unique opportunity to transform energy policies, technologies, and procurement practices- but only if we work together.”

SEforALL’s Energy Compacts were introduced with backing from UN-Energy ahead of the UN High-level Dialogue on Energy in September.

Google is itself currently pursuing a goal to operate all its data centers and office campuses around the world on carbon-free energy at all times by 2030.
