Town of Colchester Deploys 10 MW Fuel Cell System
The Town of Colchester, Conn., announced Oct. 28 that it will be deploying 10 MW of clean energy fuel cells that are expected to reduce community emissions by 3,850 tons per year.
The fuel-flexible, solid oxide fuel cell servers will be provided by Bloom Energy and should reduce smog-forming pollution and particulate matter by over 99% in comparison to current displaced grid alternatives. The fuel cell installation is located at a local substation so that it can target local power generation capacity.
The installation was selected by the Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection’s Clean Energy Request for Proposals in addition to offshore wind and anaerobic digestion projects.
“We are environmental stewards of this land and of our planet,” Mary Bylone, first selectman of the Town of Colchester, said in a statement. “Implementing clean energy solutions, such as Bloom Energy Servers, aligns with our dedication to our land, wildlife, and the future generations of our community.”
The project was funded through a long-term purchase agreement between Colchester and energy providers Eversource and United Illuminating.
