Huhtamaki to Cover 30% of US and Mexico Operations with Wind Energy

Huhtamaki announced Feb. 24 that it signed a 12-year VPPA for 42 MW of wind energy.

The sustainable packaging company will cover approximately 30% of its operational electricity demand in the United States and Mexico, including 18 manufacturing units, with the energy sourced from the agreement. The VPPA was executed with NextEra Energy Resources and the energy from the agreement will come from the Inertia Wind Energy Center in the Electricity Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT) North Zone.

The 300 MW Texas wind project is expected to be operational by the end of 2022 and will offset more than 71,000 tons of CO2 emissions annually. The clean energy will support Huhtamaki’s goals of reaching carbon-neutral production by 2030.

To further support this goal, the company plans to reduce emissions from electricity use by 24.7% and emissions associated with its product end-of-life by 13.5% by 2030. These targets were approved by the SBTi and will be significantly pursued through the further use of renewable electricity.

“We believe in protecting food, people and the planet,” Deputy CEO Thomas Guest said in a statement. “This agreement marks an important milestone on our journey towards delivering on our ambitious 2030 sustainability agenda. The agreement builds on the European VPPA agreement announced late in 2021, which covers 80% of our European electricity usage.”
