Kraft Heinz pursues 15% drop in energy use
Kraft Heinz announced in their newly released 2020 Environmental Social Governance Report that they plan to decrease energy use by 15% at a majority of manufacturing facilities globally by 2025.
The condiment producer also committed to sourcing renewable energy for a majority of their global facilities by 2025. They have been expanding the solar projects at various global facilities and at three sites in China alone estimated that the combined projects will save 2,028 tons of CO2 from the atmosphere each year.
Kraft Heinz is also focused on their supplier network and plans to sustainably source 100% of Heinz Ketchup tomatoes by 2025 globally. The company estimated that 80% of their total carbon footprint is produced by their suppliers, so they plan to address those emissions accordingly.
The company has been pursuing technology in cogeneration and biogas generated from a wastewater treatment plant. One such implementation of this resulted in a reduction in energy use by 53% in the first six months.
“At Kraft Heinz, we’re constantly re-evaluating our practices to ensure we’re being a responsible global company, as well as global citizens with a duty to bring our company and products to consumers in a healthy, sustainable way,” CEO Miguel Patricio said in a statement. “This new ESG strategy reflects a new company Value: We do the right thing. We’re actively working each day to create a company and products we and the world can be proud of.”
