DHL rolls out fleet of new electric delivery vans in U.S.

Deutsche Post DHL Group will be rolling out a fleet of electric delivery vans across U.S. cities starting in Spring 2020 through an initiative to cut greenhouse gas emissions.

Reuters reported Nov. 25 that DHL will be debuting StreetScooter’s zero-emission Work L delivery van in two urban U.S. markets. DHL has not yet released which cities that will be.

DHL fully acquired StreetScooter in 2014. The two companies expect full deployment of the Work L delivery vans to come in 2022 and 2023.

According to a news release, the StreetScooter Work and Work L vans can reach a top speed of 120 km/h and can reach a charge of 80% within five hours thanks to a new faster charging system of 11 kW.

“StreetScooter is a well-known ‘early bird’ in the electric light commercial vehicle sector,” StreetScooter GmbH CEO Jörg Sommer said in a statement. “Years of experience and more than 100 million kilometers on the road have shown us what’s important in tough delivery traffic and last-mile logistics. We have incorporated those insights into a new design for our success models, the WORK and WORK L. The results speak for themselves: optimal operational equipment for environmentally conscious fleet customers.”

Over the last three years, DHL has launched “CO2-free last-mile delivery” initiatives in German cities, including Berlin, Hamburg and Munich. In Amsterdam, Vienna and cities around Germany, 10,000 of the 12,000 StreetScooter electric vehicles on the road make DHL deliveries and save about 36,000 metric tons of carbon each year, Reuters reported.

DHL previously deployed a fleet of 63 electric vehicle vans by the manufacturer Workhouse Group in February to the San Francisco Bay Area.
