Two NY Towns Launch Community Choice Solar Program

Residents of Brockport and Lima, N.Y., now have access to the country’s first opt-out community choice solar program.

Joule’s launched its Finger Lakes Community Choice program, through which the two villages will receive a combined 28 million kWh annually from six local community solar farms. Residents will be subscribed to individual farms and receive electricity from the respective program.

Residents will be automatically enrolled in the program but will be able to opt-out at any time penalty-free. The eligible customers in Brockport and Lima include more than 200 low-income households and approximately 200 moderate-income.

The solar farms are expected to begin operation in October and all residents should be covered by Spring 2022. The program is expected to reduce residents’ electricity bills by up to 10% over the next 25 years.

Finger Lakes Community Choice also launched a community choice electric supply program to provide residents with renewable energy from run-of-river hydropower for the next two years. Combined with the community solar project, residents will receive an estimated 48 million kWh of renewable energy in total, avoiding 34,000 metric tons of CO2 annually.

“Community choice aggregation has long been our goal and through this partnership with Joule, we finally have a program that will benefit our residents with guaranteed savings and help New York reach its clean energy goals,” Lima Deputy Mayor John Wadach said in a statement. “The fact that our residents will be able to reap both financial and environmental benefits without having to take any action makes our efforts worthwhile. We hope that other municipalities will also have their voices heard and can offer similar programs to benefit their residents.”
