Nucor inks deal for 250 MW of solar power

Nucor Corporation announced Nov. 13 that it has entered into a 15-year VPPA for 250 MW from a Texas solar plant.

This is the steel producer’s first VPPA and will also be the largest in the industry. The VPPA was completed with EDF Renewables North America, the owner of the solar farm, which is expected to begin construction in the summer of 2022 and begin producing electricity by 2023.

“Nucor is one of the most efficient and cleanest steel producers in the world, and we are always looking for ways to reduce our carbon footprint. That is why we are proud to make our production process even cleaner by supporting the development of this solar energy project,” Leon Topalian, President & Chief Executive Officer of Nucor Corporation, said in a statement. “We are already North America's largest recycler, and supporting the addition of more clean power to the regional grid via this agreement further demonstrates Nucor's commitment to sustainable steelmaking.”

Nucor completed the agreement with the help of GreenFront Energy Partners and WattTime. The power generated from the solar plant will be used in the production of Nucor’s steel and steel products.
