Renewables top coal for first time
For the first time ever, renewable energy (including hydro, biomass, wind, solar and geothermal) is projected to generate more electricity than coal-fired plants for the month of April and could do so again in May, according to data published in the Energy Information Administration’s Short-Term Energy Outlook.

Renewable energy = one-third of global power capacity
The International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) announced an annual increase of 7.9% for 2018 of global renewable energy capacity, bolstered by new additions from solar and wind energy. Globally, total renewable energy generation capacity reached 2,351 GW at the end of last year – around a third of total installed electricity capacity.

University of Pittsburgh turns to hydropower
The University of Pittsburgh announced that starting in 2022, 25% of its electricity will be purchased from a new hydropower plant currently under construction five miles from campus. The announcement is part of the University’s plan to get the research institution to 50% renewable power by 2030.
