Applied Materials inks PPA for 10% of wind farm, commits to 100% RE

Applied Materials announced July 21 their new commitment to source 100% renewable energy by 2030.

In pursuit of this goal, the semiconductor producer also announced a PPA they signed with Apex Clean Energy for their 500 MW White Mesa Wind project in Crockett County, Texas. This agreement is expected to cover 10% of the wind farm’s energy output.

“Our PPA is an important step in helping Applied Materials reach our reduced carbon footprint targets as it will enable us to achieve 100 percent renewable energy sourcing in the U.S. and 73 percent worldwide by 2022,” Scott Hambleton, managing director of Environmental, Health and Safety at Applied Materials, said in a statement. “We are excited to accelerate our environmental sustainability goals with a clean energy project that is supported by other leading technology companies.”

This agreement was facilitated by 3Degrees. With their signing of this PPA, Applied Materials joined a list of other tech companies that will receive energy from the White Mesa Wind project, including Apple, eBay, Samsung and Sprint.

“Applied Materials is solidifying itself as a renewable energy leader through strong commitments to reduce its carbon footprint and achieve 100 percent renewable energy sourcing globally over the next 10 years,” Miranda Ballentine, CEO, Renewable Energy Buyers Alliance (REBA), said in a statement. “As we work toward achieving a zero-carbon future, this type of leadership will continue to move the industry forward and set an example for other large energy buyers to follow.”
