Ameren pitches green tariff for C&I customers

Joining a quickly growing group of electric utilities that are ramping up their clean energy options for commercial and industrial customers, Ameren Missouri on Nov. 28 filed with state regulators its plans to create a green tariff.

The Ameren Corp. subsidiary says its Renewable Choice Program, which is subject to approval by the Missouri Public Service Commission, will allow large businesses and municipalities across the state to subscribe to 100% renewable energy generated from wind.

According to the proposal filed with the PSC, eligible customers would be able to elect to receive renewable energy from Ameren Missouri by subscribing to a block of power produced for sale into the wholesale energy market. Subscriptions would be reflected on the customer's monthly bill over a term of 15 years.

The utility said talks are already in progress with several of its large customers that have expressed demand for cleaner energy.

The Renewable Choice Program is the latest plan building off of Ameren Missouri's recently announced Integrated Resource Plan, which it says was developed with the input of a wide variety of stakeholders. The IRP calls for the addition of at least 700 megawatts of wind generation by 2020 and 100 megawatts of solar generation in the next 10 years.

The news follows a flurry of announcements from utilities in recent months regarding new programs designed to cater to increasing demand from large commercial and industrial companies for clean energy options. Earlier in November, Westar Energy and Kansas Gas and Electric proposed a similar program for its large customers in Kansas. In Septemeber, CMS Energy subsidiary Consumers Energy; Southern Co. subsidiary Georgia Power; and Dominion Energy Virginia announced new clean energy options for their large customers.
